My journey into the world of banking was an unexpected one. Growing up in a small town in Tennessee, I had never considered banking as a potential career path. However, life had its own plans for me. After moving to Kodiak, Alaska as a military spouse and a new mother, an opportunity arose for me to work as a teller at the National Bank of Alaska. Little did I know that this step would mark the beginning of a fulfilling career in banking.
The Power of Empathy and Helping Others
From the very start, my belief in treating others as I want to be treated became a guiding principle in my life. Banking provided a unique platform for me to help people, and my innate ability to connect with others proved to be a significant asset. Through my career, I have not only made a positive impact on people’s lives but also formed meaningful relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including prominent figures such as Presidents and Royalty.
Inspirations and Personal Growth
My greatest inspiration in recent years has been my son, Steve. Observing his natural leadership qualities and his authenticity has been truly inspiring. It has made me reflect on whether I have followed in his footsteps or if he has followed in mine. While his path seems effortless, I want to clarify that he has worked very hard to reach the position of President and CEO, just as I have worked hard to become the Executive Chairman of the bank.
Recognitions and Philanthropic Endeavors
Over the years, the bank and I have received numerous prestigious recognitions and awards. Some of these include the Sponsor and Honorary Chair of the Jewel Ball by the American Cancer Society in 2016, the Spirit of Hope Award from the Cancer Support Community in 2015, and being named Community Banker of The Year by the Independent Community Bankers Association in 2014. Other notable honors include the Women’s Hall of Fame Award, the Kennedy Laureate Award, and being recognized as one of the 25 Most Powerful Women in Banking by U.S. Banker Magazine. These accolades reflect our commitment to excellence and our dedication to making a positive impact in the community.
Dear to my heart, the Summit Bank Foundation, founded in 1998, is dedicated to promoting volunteerism and corporate support for nonprofits in the San Francisco Bay Area communities. Its core focus has been education and health, providing student college scholarships, funds for Leukemia and Cancer Research, and funding for clinical trials for lymphoma, breast cancer, acute myeloid leukemia, and multiple myeloma.
Essential Traits for Leaders, Especially Women
As a leader, being a good listener is crucial. Believing in oneself and remaining true to one’s values are essential, particularly for women. Curiosity and the willingness to ask questions are also important qualities that leaders should possess to excel in any situation.
Overcoming Obstacles and Challenges
Throughout my career, I have faced significant obstacles, primarily stemming from people who betrayed my trust. The initial betrayal occurred within ten months of the bank opening, and unfortunately, more instances followed. However, I learned to navigate these challenges and grew stronger as a result.
The Essence of Leadership and Giving Back
True leaders live their purpose by serving others, including their employees, and fostering a culture that allows individuals to reach their full potential. Giving credit to the team for success is an essential aspect of leadership. I wholeheartedly agree with Kirk Douglas’ statement, “You have not learned how to live until you have learned how to give.”
In conclusion, my journey into banking may have been unexpected, but it has been filled with personal and professional growth. Through empathy, dedication, and a commitment to making a positive impact, I have been able to thrive in the banking industry. My advice to the next generation of women leaders is to believe in themselves and strive to be the kind of leaders who inspire and uplift others. Remember, people don’t leave bad jobs; they leave bad leaders.
