In this interview, we explore the remarkable career of James L. Newman, Managing Partner of Newman Consulting Group, LLC, whose path from a young mechanical engineer to one of America’s leading voices in energy efficiency and green building innovation has been defined by technical mastery, visionary leadership, and an unwavering commitment to sustainability.

The Early Path and Driving Passion

Jim Newman began his career with a deep-seated passion for environmental stewardship and sustainable engineering. Holding a BSME from Tufts University, he later pursued MBA studies at the University of Detroit and Wayne State University. This academic foundation laid the groundwork for a distinguished career spanning over five decades, during which he became known not only as a technical expert but as a pioneer in sustainable building practices. From co-founding Thermal-Netics, Inc., the largest manufacturer’s representative HVAC (Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning) sales group in Michigan in 1972 to launching NCG in 2002, Jim’s journey reflects continuous innovation and dedication to energy conservation.

Founding Newman Consulting Group and Defining Its Mission

Jim Newman founded NCG with the goal of offering world-class energy efficiency and indoor air quality (IAQ) consulting. Based in Farmington Hills, Michigan, NCG serves clients globally, working closely with architects, engineers, contractors, and building owners to create high-performing, energy-efficient buildings. As Managing Partner, James has overseen numerous successful projects aimed at reducing energy use, enhancing indoor environmental quality, and achieving sustainability goals. Under his leadership, NCG has become an EPA Energy Star® Partner and a Rebuild Michigan® Partner, gaining national recognition for helping commercial and industrial property owners implement deep energy retrofits and optimize building operations.

Commitment to Innovation and Green Technology

Jim is widely recognized for advancing green technology and sustainable practices. Through lectures, publications, and professional contributions, he has educated thousands on LEED®, HVAC design, resilience, and efficient operations. He participated as one of only 16 energy auditors in the pilot of the ASHRAE Building Energy Quotient (bEQ) Program and became a Distinguished Lecturer for ASHRAE in 2010. His technical expertise is matched by his commitment to shaping energy policy and fostering a culture of sustainability across sectors.
