Her story is one of resilience, lifelong learning, and a deep belief in the transformative power of education.

Professional Journey and Academic Foundation

Aftan T Wright has dedicated over twenty two years to the education industry, building a career rooted in teaching, counseling, and administration. She began her journey in 2003 as a substitute teacher in the San Bernardino City Unified School District and later worked in Redlands and Moreno Valley Unified School District in similar roles. San Bernardino ultimately became the district where she served the longest, spending nearly nineteen years gaining invaluable experience and developing a deep connection to the community. Academically, her background is extensive and multidisciplinary. She earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in International Business Administration from Texas Wesleyan University in 2003, followed by a Master of Business Administration with a Global Business Emphasis from the University of Redlands in 2006. Initially aspiring to become an international business lawyer, her passion shifted after discovering a love for working with students, which ultimately led her into educational leadership. Her academic accomplishments also include a Master of Science in Educational School Counseling and Guidance Services with a Pupil Personnel Services Credential in 2011, a Doctorate of Education in Community College Leadership and Change from Fielding Graduate University in 2020, a Certificate of Neurodiversity and Inclusion from the University of La Verne in 2021, a Master of Science in Applied School Leadership from National University in 2022, and completion of her Clear Administrative Credential through UC Irvine. She has completed three theses focused on cross cultural teaching, school counseling, and educational administration, reflecting her deep commitment to research based practice.

Leadership Values and Philosophy

Aftan T Wright’s leadership style is grounded in authenticity, active listening, and a strong belief in supporting educators so they can best serve students. She believes that leaders must listen first in order to truly understand the needs of their staff and help them grow into their purpose. Her personal mission as an administrator is to support teachers by encouraging them to work smarter rather than harder, while always keeping students at the center of decision making. She is a strong advocate for AVID strategies, which she has used since 2015 to promote academic success, engagement, and a positive learning environment. For her, leadership is not about authority but about influence, trust, and creating conditions where both staff and students can thrive. She views students as the future educators, doctors, and lawyers of the nation and takes seriously the responsibility of shaping their educational experience through intentional and ethical leadership.

Defining Turning Points in Her Career

One of the most significant turning points in Aftan T Wright’s life occurred in 2003 when she passed the CBEST and began substitute teaching. Although she had worked in several other sectors including government, retail, and housing, education proved to be the field that offered her the greatest opportunities for growth and impact. As an African American woman with an MBA, she faced challenges entering the business sector despite her qualifications, scholarships, and professional networking experiences, including connections with major corporations. Over time, she recognized that her true focus was not corporate business but the difference she could make in education. This realization solidified her commitment to the field and redirected her ambitions toward leadership roles that would allow her to advocate for students and educators alike.

Long Term Vision for Educational Leadership

Looking ahead, Aftan T Wright’s long term vision centers on continuous professional growth and data informed leadership. She is committed to remaining open to coaching and learning from trusted sources that provide meaningful insights into student academic success. Her goal is to leverage research and proven strategies, particularly AVID based practices, to better support teachers and enhance instructional outcomes. She believes that effective leadership requires constant reflection, adaptability, and a willingness to evolve alongside the changing needs of schools and communities.

Innovation in Education and Professional Growth

Innovation, in Aftan T Wright’s view, begins with understanding ones natural leadership strengths and authentically applying training to inspire both self and others. She recognizes that burnout is a reality in education and intentionally seeks to learn from educators who are struggling in order to better support them and utilize their strengths. She strongly supports instructional strategies such as AVID and defronting the classroom, which promote teacher proximity, student interaction, and engagement. In addition to her work in K through 12 education, she is currently attending UCLA Law School and is set to graduate in May 2026 with a Master of Legal Studies in Employment and Human Resources Law. She aims to use her legal knowledge to support upward mobility in management and strengthen her effectiveness as an educational leader. She credits the program’s faculty, including Assistant Dean and Professor Jason Fiske, for providing an exceptional learning experience within a highly selective program.

Balancing Risk Taking and Strategic Planning

Balancing risk and strategy has been a defining aspect of Aftan T Wright’s journey. She has navigated the demands of full time leadership roles while raising her daughter with the support of her family and her ex husband, Andrew Young. Her approach to risk taking is rooted in lifelong learning, a mindset shaped early on by a formative experience at age seventeen when she met journalist Lisa Ling at a leadership conference for young women. Ling’s advice that one can never know enough left a lasting impression and inspired Aftan to continuously seek knowledge even when it meant being uncomfortable. This philosophy continues to guide her professional and personal growth.

Impact on the Industry Over the Next Decade

Through her work in teaching, counseling, and administration, Aftan T Wright hopes that her research and leadership practices will positively impact future generations of students. She recognizes the challenges of visibility and recognition in the education industry, particularly as an African American woman, but remains committed to ensuring that her contributions support student growth and opportunity. Her focus remains on using data, research, and lived experience to advocate for equitable educational outcomes.

Trends and Disruptions in Education

Aftan T Wright identifies major shifts such as Common Core and the ongoing influence of AVID as transformative forces in education. She emphasizes AVID’s role in helping students believe in themselves, particularly in the face of academic setbacks or personal loss. She also expresses concern about potential reductions in federal funding for immigrant and Dreamer students, noting the significant impact such changes could have on Hispanic immigrant communities striving to achieve their educational goals.

The Role of Technology and Artificial Intelligence

Technology, particularly artificial intelligence, will play a defining role in the future of education. Aftan T Wright believes that administrators must ensure AI is used appropriately to enhance learning without compromising the development of foundational skills. From her perspective, technology should serve as a tool that supports both teachers and students while preparing learners to graduate from high school and successfully pursue higher education.

Leadership Responsibility for Future Generations

For Aftan T Wright, the responsibility of todays leaders lies in accountability, integrity, and visibility. She believes leaders must remember that their actions are constantly observed by students and that professionalism and conviction are essential. By mentoring staff, fostering resilience, and creating opportunities for growth, leaders can sustain the education industry and positively shape future generations.

Addressing Global Challenges Through Education

Aftan T Wright views struggle as an essential component of progress, drawing inspiration from the words of Frederick Douglass. As an African American woman, she values setbacks as learning opportunities and is determined to help develop future leaders who can read, write, and access technology confidently. She uses her voice to advocate for those who have been silenced and to ensure that students are empowered to question, grow, and lead.

Commitment to Social Responsibility

In her role as Assistant Principal within Moreno Valley Unified School District, Aftan T Wright prioritizes listening to parents, supporting staff, and cultivating a positive and caring school culture. She has served at multiple sites including Sunnymead Middle School, Sunnymeadows Elementary, Seneca Elementary, Ridgecrest Elementary, and Box Springs Elementary. Currently serving at Seneca and Box Springs Elementary Schools, she is committed to maintaining an open door policy and leading with positivity, empathy, and consistency.

She approaches reflection as a continuous process of development and embraces each chapter of her journey as a necessary step toward becoming the leader she is today.

Aftan T Wright draws her greatest inspiration from her parents. Her mother, Racheal Wright, consistently believed in her potential and supported her ambitions, while her father, Ralph Wright, influenced her through his roles as her teacher, coach, and principal. The lasting impact she hopes to leave is one defined by love, joy, and meaningful relationships with students and educators. She strives to create a culture rooted in ingenuity and G R I T, encompassing growth mindset, resilience, interest, and tenacity, inspired by the research of Angela Duckworth.

What distinguishes Aftan T Wright as a pioneering leader is her unwavering G R I T, characterized by passion, perseverance, long term focus, resilience, and courage. Her diverse experiences across multiple districts have shaped her commitment to equity, inclusion, and advocacy, particularly for students with individual education plans.
