Personal Journey as a Business Leader: Candice Desmet, Founder of Act’in Theatre
I am Candice Desmet, a 34-year-old French actress. I began acting training in France while pursuing my studies in biology. In 2011, I joined Guenal Morin’s troupe in Nantes, West France, and started my theatrical career. After moving to London in 2012, I joined an improvisational troupe and performed in London, France, and Morocco with various theater companies. I landed my first role in the feature film NABORU.
Motivated by the lack of suitable theater and drama classes when I arrived in London, I opened Act’in Theatre in 2015. I felt that something was missing, not just for myself but for others as well. Act’in Theatre began with one French-speaking class and has now grown to offer seven different drama classes for adults, two classes for children (in French), three improvisation classes for adults, and cinema workshops.
Significant Accomplishments and Success Stories
As an actress, I take pride in participating in cinematographic projects and developing my acting skills with the cast members. At Act’in Theatre, I am proud of making drama accessible to those who initially disliked it or believed they weren’t talented enough. Witnessing students evolve and seeing how drama positively impacts their personal and professional lives brings me immense joy.
Leadership Style and Approach
I believe in fostering energy and motivation by allowing individuals to pursue what they enjoy. I respect their rhythm and preferences, which serves as their primary source of inspiration. My leadership style involves supporting and managing the team while working together on projects. I believe that the company’s success is only possible through collective work.
Unique Strategies and Initiatives
Act’in Theatre is known for providing quality services in a friendly and non-judgmental atmosphere. The company focuses on creating a space for total freedom, where creativity and expression are encouraged. We prioritize respecting students’ rhythms and guiding them in discovering themselves and surpassing their limitations through tailored exercises and techniques. The long-term commitment of students and their continued development is a point of pride for Act’in Theatre.
Navigating Challenging Situations
The planned expansion of Act’in Theatre faced challenges due to Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic. The creative industries, including the cultural sector, were significantly affected. To overcome these obstacles, Act’in Theatre adapted and changed, working on brand development, out-of-curriculum activities, and expansion in other European countries. Despite the pressure and uncertainty, Act’in Theatre is now looking forward to an exciting and successful future.
Key Values and Principles
My main objective is to grow and solidify Act’in Theatre by developing more workshops, putting on shows, and expanding to other locations. I prioritize recruiting a solid team that shares the same values to ensure the company’s sustainability and meet the growing demand. Personalization and conviviality are vital values that I strive to maintain during the company’s development.
Staying Informed and Contributing to Success
I stay informed about the latest trends and developments in the industry through regular news updates and networking. Meeting people involved in the industry, attending festivals, and visiting creative venues helps me discover new talent and structures. Human contact and networking play a crucial role in my business and contribute to its success.
Contributing Factors to Success
Act’in Theatre’s unique position as a bilingual drama company in London contributes to its success. The company was formed by an actress with and for the students. The establishment of different troupes and the creation of unique performance formats like Entre Act and In’terval have set Act’in Theatre apart. The continuous development of new shows, writing plays and sketches tailored to students and audiences, and the recognition of the company’s work contribute to its success.
Future Aspirations
Act’in Theatre’s future plans revolve around development. The goal is to work from our own premises in London and Lille (France), expand the theater beyond English borders, and gain recognition internationally. I also have film projects in the pipeline and aim to manage the company alongside my acting career. As a leader, I aspire to surround myself with a strong team and delegate responsibilities to support the company’s growth.
Personal Accolades and Awards
Act’in Theatre has received awards such as the Prestige Award for drama workshop of the year 2023 and the Corporatelivewire global awards 2021/2022 for drama workshop of the year. These accolades recognize Act’in Theatre’s contribution to the field and its commitment to providing quality drama workshops.
